Striving for Wisdom

Becoming your true self takes time, makes you go out of your comfort zone, and dares you to think for yourself.

Between my junior and senior year of college, I spent the summer studying medieval literature in England. Just before my trip, and to go along with the theme of my studies, I started reading The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

I was so engrossed with the reimagined tale that I had to take the 875-page behemoth with me on my trip. Reading it in those surroundings had such a profound impact on me. The book made me think about my personal power – it made me stronger, grounded my spirit, and allowed me to see new angles to old stories. Most importantly, it tapped the goddess within.

Out of curiosity, I pulled it off the shelf to see what pages I would have dog-eared during such a transformative time in my life, and wondered if there was anything that still resonated. One page particularly stands out now – when the Merlin says:

I am dedicated to the belief that it is God’s will that all men should strive for wisdom in themselves, not look to it from some other.

Especially at a time in history when we are bombarded with information, it is so important to cultivate our own ideas. Rather than accepting what a bot or commentator states, it is important to look more deeply into the questions we have. Go to more than one source, and to sources that you may not usually consider. Look at all sides of a given topic. Be curious. It is simple research and is so healthy for us.

Our thoughts are what make us unique. Striving for our own personal wisdom has so many benefits, including:

  • building character

  • breaking free from conformity

  • enhancing problem solving and creativity

  • helping you and others understand why you think this way.

Becoming your true self takes time, makes you go out of your comfort zone, and dares you to think for yourself. Once you have it, your world begins to make sense.  If you are struggling with the thoughts of others and are looking to find your wisdom, coaching can help.
